Online Teacher Intern Program

The KCNS Online Teacher Intern Program provides an alternate route to earning a Preliminary Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credential, rooted in collaboration, equity, and honesty. A comprehensive program of online and in-person courses and fieldwork, robust mentor support, and systematic professional development equip our new teachers with the skills and tools needed to be successful in the classroom.

Rather than the implementation of traditional student teaching, the KCNS Online Teacher Intern Program is designed to begin in a teacher’s first year of active employment under a District Intern Credential. During this two year, job-embedded program, candidates receive regular mentorship from veteran colleagues, coursework dedicated to the understanding of the California Teaching Performance Expectations (TPE), guidance in the submission of the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) as well as the new literacy TPEs, and support in the application of successful teaching strategies. We believe that this hands-on approach to teacher education will partner seamlessly with the habits of mind employed by professional educators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to be employed at KCNS to enroll in the program?
A: No, we accept teachers from any K-12 school so long as the candidate is head teacher 50% of the time and teaching in a Multiple Subject classroom.

Q:What is a District Intern Credential?
A: This credential will authorize an intern to teach in a classroom setting for two years, while enrolled in an accredited Teacher Intern Program. In other words, you can hold a teaching job WHILE earning your preliminary credential with a District Intern Credential.

Q: Do I have to have a job as a teacher before I can enroll in the program?
A: Yes, part of the application process is to verify employment or a teaching contract. You can participate in our preservice summer courses while you look for a teaching position. However, you can only enter the 2 year credential program if you hold employment.

Q: How can I get a teaching job without a credential?
A: The District Intern Program is a unique path to earning your credential, however, it is widely known in San Diego. Often times, schools will hire teachers from within their staff knowing that this pathway is an option. Applying to teaching positions without a credential is a possibility so long as you meet the program requirements, you can then inform the employer you will be in this program and can teach on a District Intern Credential.

Q: Do I have to go to campus for courses?
A: All of our coursework is online. You will have to meet “in person” with our cohort via Zoom several times a year. Mentorship is based on your employment school site.
